Discover: FRIENDS DON’T DIE

Music impacts a lot of individuals’ lives, may it be their profession or just a necessity to get through their day. Each person has a personal connection to the music they listen to and can find specific meanings for each song that’s unique from the next listener’s.

Orange County musician George Gomez, professionally known as Friends Don’t Die, is a believer in creating music that resonates with the masses and finds inspiration from all the people and parts of his life.

Originally from Berkeley, California, Gomez made his trek down to Southern California for college and has been here ever since.

“I lived in Berkeley but went to school in San Francisco, like [the] Golden Gate area, so a lot of different people, a lot of kids from different backgrounds,” said Gomez, while talking about how his upbringing impacted his music today.

Though Friends Don’t Die is a solo act, Gomez recruited the brilliant minds of his friends to help showcase the music he’s created. On top of their musician abilities, he found inspiration in each of their different backgrounds and musical preferences. He states the various different music styles each of his bandmates have, ranging from Rock to Pop to Disco, and how these have all influenced his creative process.

“So, they’ve shared music with me and all that stuff and it’s just been great to be inspired by them,” he shared. Gomez also attributes his sound to musicians such as Beach House and Radiohead.

When it comes to the story behind the song, Gomez tries to find inspiration in people, stories, and situations separate from his own life. But with his recent release, Gomez found inspiration in another important person close to him.

“The last song, [is] actually about my little sister… people thought it was like a love song which was super funny, it was supposed to be just like… “I’ll be around” like your older brother, I’ll be around,” shared George Gomez, while discussing his new single “Be Around.”

Though his initial inspiration didn’t click with his listeners, he’s happy to see the different ways they’ve interpreted the song and adapted it to their own lives.

“But then it was really cool that people took their own meaning from it. I ended up changing the name of it three or four times because I… really want people to make the song mean whatever they want it to mean. I want it to be versatile and relatable so I just changed it to ‘Be Around’ because you can be around for anyone.”
